Baby!!!

Yesterday morning we went to the doctor to find out the sex of the baby. Oddly enough, we had to skip our biology class in order to make the appointment because my doctor, for whatever reason, only sees her pregnant patients on Wednesdays between 8 and 12. Of course, diligent students that we are, we decided to let our professor know on Monday, the first day of class, that we would not be in class on Wednesday because of this appointment. Our professor was totally fine with it and told us that chances are we'd learn more biology in our doctor's appointment then we'd ever learn in his class! (Not really sure what this says about his class, but it is for non-majors, after all.)

We went to the doctor's appointment, arriving early and thinking that maybe if we were early, we'd get in earlier and be able to leave earlier. No chance. It's amazing because no matter what time we arrive, we're almost always half an hour behind. And really there's nothing that can be done about it. So we brought books. Stephen read the chapter in Biology that was assigned from the last class and Krista worked on reading Samuel Johnson's Preface to the Dictionary. That reading was absolutely so much worse than waiting...a 20 page explanation of a dictionary. So wrong.

Finally we were called. The technician that does the ultrasounds is a really funny Italian Catholic lady. She's loud and happy and makes the visit even better! Of course, the conversation between the three of us always comes back to the same topics: thank goodness it's only one baby this time and not twins, her experience and then in turn ours of Catholic schooling, crazy pregnant women, etc.

The news she gave us was good: the baby is totally healthy. No downs syndrome, all the baby's organs are developing completely and normally. Simply put: everything looks perfect. The baby weighs about 9oz at this point. The technician asked us about the due date and whether or not the doctor had pushed it back last time we had been there, which she had. The technician pushed it back again (sort of) and told us between June 7 and June 12. (Krista is starting to hope they can actually give her a better idea of a due date as it gets closer, otherwise, it's starting to look as if this baby isn't actually going to be born at all!)

Then the big news came. She asked us what we thought the baby was (while showing us a picture that told us what the baby was...) Krista guessed wrong and Stephen just waited quietly for the answer...

A girl!!!

Stephen immediately grinned from ear to ear and Krista was thrilled as well. After the technician left, Krista asked Stephen if he'd be okay, paying for that wedding. Fortunately, he seems to be okay with it. :) We went in for a visit with the doctor, who told us that she'd been wrong guessing babies' genders lately; guessing for most people that they'd be having a boy and then hearing that it was a girl. Apparently, it's a girl year.

After we left the doctor's office we made our usual round of phone calls, calling both sets of parents to tell them what we'd found out. We tried to find out what everyone was actually hoping for, boy or girl, before telling them that it's a girl, but none of them seemed to fall for that, skirting the question by telling us that they just wanted a healthy baby. (Which is what we all want, of course.) Stephen's mom said that she was hoping for a boy, since she has three granddaughters already, saying that a boy would be nice but of course she'll be happy either way. Krista's dad said that boys are more fun for dads but that he's had his fill of boys and that he'd be happy if it was a girl.

In the end, everyone was really excited for us. And of course, we're really excited too! The blue and brown idea for the nursery was ditched and now we're working on new ideas.

Maybe..pink and brown??
